It’s not only important to watch what you put IN your body but also what you put ON it! I didn’t know what I didn’t know about harmful chemically-infused products until I started doing a bit of research on my own. Sure, I’d heard things were harmful, but shopping for nontoxic cleaning products is not as simple as going to Whole Foods or ordering a monthly bundle subscription. Many brands claim to be “natural” or “nontoxic”; but the FDA doesn’t regulate many terms and it is not required for cleaning brands to include the ingredients on their packaging. Overwhelmed yet? I was too...
There is so much “green washing” in our environment. After doing my own research I learned that going green and going clean doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. For home cleaning, vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, etc. can do the trick for pennies on the dollar, compared to buying conventional cleaning products.
The fact is that when we clean with toxic chemicals, we ingest them through our lungs, and when we are washing our laundry or dishes with toxic chemicals, we absorb them through our skin. Once added up, we are exposing ourselves to more than we realize, not to mention that it’s all going straight back into our water supply.
I have slowly started to make the switch over to clean makeup and cleaning products and it has changed the game for my overall health, and knocked off one of my 2018 Resolutions! Not only have I noticed a better air quality in my little bungalow, but also a purer environment. My husband’s allergies are better and we sleep more soundly (mostly because my husband and dog don’t snore as badly…although, that hasn’t stopped). Studies have shown that using a household cleaning spray, even as little as once a week, raises the risk of developing asthma. Scary, right?
I am a realist — sometimes it is easier to just make a store purchase (which I totally get, and do myself), and it is always easier to make gradual changes (which we did as well). I have shared my favorite three EASY mixes and my favorite three store bought brands.
My 3 Fav Mixes:
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda (or 2 teaspoons borax) into 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water.
- Natural Wood Cleaner: ½ C Apple Cider Vinegar; 1/4 C Olive Oil; 1 TBSP Lemon Juice; 1 TBSP Vegetable Glycerin; 20-30 drops of Citrus Essential Oil
- Oven Cleaner: 1 1/2 cup of baking soda; 1/2 cup of sea salt; 1/2 cup of washing soda; dash of distilled water (make a thin paste); 1/2 cup of white vinegar; 10 drops of lemon essential oil; 10 drops Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil
My 3 Fav Store-bought Brands (when you’re in a pinch or if you don’t feel like being a mixologist):
- Dr. Bronnor’s Castille Soap
- Mrs. Meyer’s
- The Honest Company
Concerns for health are becoming more prevalent and people are becoming more aware of the harsh effects cleaning chemicals are having on their overall health and environment. By making small changes and going back to basics - I have found green ways to clean that have outstanding benefits. Below are a handful of reasons why I made the switch. You have to do what is right for you and your family; however, I will forever prefer the smell of essential oils over Pine-Sol - you choose! ;)
